BEIJING -- The top legislature on Saturday held a joint inquiry into a report on the enforcement of the Law on the Prevention and Control of Soil Pollution.

Li Zhanshu, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, attended the meeting.

During the inquiry, legislators asked questions about measures to implement the responsibility system for achieving goals set for soil pollution control, protect farmland to ensure food security, and promote the safe use of agricultural land, among others.

State Councilor Wang Yong and officials from multiple ministries and government agencies including the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology, answered the questions.

During his speech, Li said that the NPC Standing Committee has resolutely implemented the decisions and plans of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on tackling pollution, and constantly strengthened legislation and oversight on ecological and environmental protection.

Stressing being committed to a people-centered approach to safeguard the ecological environment that is the most beneficial to people's wellbeing, Li urged efforts to continue using legal weapons to keep skies blue, water clear and land pollution-free.
