China will launch the second nationwide campaign to promote the Civil Code among the public, particularly those in rural areas, on May 1, according to the Ministry of Justice.

The campaign, jointly organized by the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, will highlight provisions of the Civil Code pertaining to agriculture, rural areas and farmers, the law on promotion of rural vitalization, the law on land administration, and the law on land contracts in rural areas.

During the month-long campaign, short videos will be produced to explain the legal issues in the Civil Code that are closely related to and widely concerned by the public, seminars will be held to advance the implementation of the law on promotion of rural vitalization, and a new batch of national demonstration villages and communities of democracy and rule of law will be named.

The campaign will also include targeted training on the Civil Code for village Party leaders, administrators, and mediators helping to settle civil disputes at the grassroots level by combining with a cultivation campaign of legally savvy talents in rural areas. Village rules and regulations will be improved based on the Civil Code to curb outdated customs in rural areas, such as lavish spending on betrothal gifts, weddings and funerals.

The Civil Code was passed on May 28, 2020 at the third session of the 13th National People's Congress and took effect on January 1, 2021.
