Wang Chen, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), called for consistent efforts to improve the people's congress system and integrate institutional strengths into the country's governance system.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, underscored the message during a visit to Central China's Hunan province from June 7 to 10.
In addition to hearing reports on the work of the provincial people's congress and Changsha municipal people's congress, as well as suggestions from lawmakers, Wang also visited several villages and enterprises.
At the Longping Rice Museum in Changsha, named after agri-scientist Yuan Longping, Wang stressed the importance of carrying on Yuan’s commitment to developing the agriculture and seed industries to ensure food security in the country.
During his visits to Huaihua and Shaoyang, he called for rigorous enforcement of the law on the promotion of rural vitalization and active development of green agriculture and rural modernization.

While in Huaihua, Wang learned about solid waste management, water pollution control and tire retreading technologies. At a law firm in Shaoyang, he was briefed about a program launched by the local legislature to expand channels that are used to solicit opinions and suggestions at the grassroots level.

Wang recognized the provincial legislature's efforts to coordinate the anti-COVID-19 efforts with social and economic development. He urged continuous endeavors to advance whole-process people's democracy, stressing that legislation should be more targeted, practical and applicable in order to contribute to good governance and sound development.
