On July 14, the delegations of the 5th Seminar for Parliaments of Developing Countries visited the Kunshan Contemporary Kunqu Opera Theatre in Kunshan, East China’s Jiangsu province. Kunqu Opera has a history of more than 600 years. It is one of the oldest existing operas in China. In 2001, it was listed as one of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. After watching the play, two representatives from Thailand and Guyana learned some simple movements with the kunqu performer. “The culture has been preserved over the years,” Thembani MbadlNyana, parliamentary advisor from South Africa, said, “A lot of Chinese children who are growing up are getting to appreciate this treasure that is the Chinese opera. It has been there for centuries and has been planted in Chinese culture.”
