Top legislator meets senior Asian legislators on ties

VLADIVOSTOK -- Top legislator Wu Bangguo met here with senior legislators from the Republic of Korea, Malaysia and Laos respectively on Monday and Tuesday on bilateral ties.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, met Kang Chang-hee, speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea (ROK) on Monday during the 21st annual meeting of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum in Russia's Far Eastern city of Vladivostok.

China's new leadership attaches great importance to China-ROK relations and is willing to uphold the spirit of unity and cooperation, strengthen strategic mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, step up communication and coordination with the ROK on international and regional issues, Wu said.

China will strive to further advance bilateral ties and make joint efforts with the ROK to safeguard peace and stability in Northeast Asia, Wu added.

During his Tuesday meeting with Abu Zahar, president of the Senate of Malaysia, Wu said the relations between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) play an important role in maintaining stability and promoting development in Asia.

China will continue to support the integration process of ASEAN, back its unity and development, Wu said.

Meanwhile, China, together with Malaysia and other ASEAN members, will push forward the China-ASEAN strategic partnership and make greater contributions to regional peace, stability and prosperity, he said.

Wu also met with Pany Yathotu, chairwoman of the Lao National Assembly, on Tuesday. He expressed the hope that both sides would stick to the spirit of long-term stability, good-neighborly friendship, mutual trust and all-around cooperation to further promote the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two countries and to benefit the two peoples.
