China, Uruguay pledge closer parliamentary cooperation

BEIJING -- Top legislator Zhang Dejiang met with Uruguayan President Jose Mujica on Tuesday, pledging to strengthen parliamentary cooperation between the two sides.

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said during the meeting that the legislative bodies of China and Uruguay have maintained contact in recent years, which has helped to increase bilateral political trust, boost the friendship between the two peoples and enhance bilateral cooperation.

To develop the two countries' friendly relationship of cooperation in a sustainable way and further serve the two countries and their peoples, he said the NPC is willing to further enhance communication with the Uruguayan parliament at all levels and work together to implement extensive agreements reached between President Xi Jinping and Mujica.

Mujica said China has enjoyed rapid development over the past decades and revised the global economic map.

He said Uruguay underscores the role of the NPC and hopes China and Uruguay will carry out comprehensive and in-depth cooperation to achieve mutually-beneficial, sustainable development.
