MOSCOW -- Russia and China will see continuation and fresh vitality in parliamentary cooperation, a senior Russian official said Friday ahead of a top legislator's visit to Moscow.

"The range of topics for discussions is traditionally wide," Valentina Matvienko, chairwoman of the Federation Council or the upper house of parliament, said of the upcoming official visit by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC).

The two sides will exchange experience in lawmaking and seek to extend and increase efficiency of communication between some localities of both countries, Matvienko told Xinhua.

Developing bilateral trade and economic cooperation, activating humanitarian cooperation and youth exchange are also on the agenda, she said.

"We look forward to meeting with Zhang Dejiang in Moscow," said Matvienko. "The very fact of the visit is a good sign of the sound cooperation between our parliaments, an important part of the Russia-China strategic partnership of coordination."

During his first official visit to Russia, Zhang will attend the seventh meeting of the China-Russia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.

Matvienko recalled the Moscow meeting between President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin in March, saying that the summit "injected a powerful impetus" to the cooperation between Russia's Federal Assembly chambers and China's NPC.

"I believe the commission's seventh meeting to be held during Zhang Dejiang's visit will be marked with new initiatives aimed at further development of cooperation between the Federation Council and the NPC," she said.

The Russian side will share with the Chinese colleagues experience in managing the Internet and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), she added.

Noting that the visit will surely produce concrete agreements, Matvienko said Russia hopes for more direct contacts and exchange of opinions, which will facilitate better understanding between parliaments.

It is very important to enhance youth exchanges, including the participation of young politicians and parliamentarians, she said.

"The Russia-China strategic partnership is the most valuable asset of the two countries, a result of long-standing joint efforts of our leaders, politicians and the people. We must pass it on to the new generations in entirety so that they can make it richer and more substantiated," said Matvienko.

It also serves both sides' interests to deepen cooperation between localities such as Russia's Far East and China's Northeast provinces.

"Obviously, new methods of our joint work in that direction are needed," she said.

Amid changing global dynamics and challenges, Matvienko said, Russia and China need to coordinate approaches to address some international and regional affairs of common concern.
