Top legislator calls for improved legislative work

GUANGZHOU -- Top legislator Zhang Dejiang has urged local legislative bodies to improve their work in order to perfect the overall law system in the country.

Zhang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), emphasized the leading role of people's congresses in legislation and urged implementation of the Legislation Law as well as improving the quality of legislative work.

At a seminar in south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday and Monday,Zhang stressed legislators at all levels must upgrade legislation in key areas according to reform progress and social economic development.

In accordance with the revised Legislation Law adopted in March, procedure and timetable for granting lawmaking powers to more cities to make local laws, which are considered an essential part of China's legal system, should be further streamlined and specified, said Zhang.
