BEIJING -- Senior official Wang Chen has stressed effective implementation of the law on safeguarding national security in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR).

Wang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and head of the China Law Society, made the remarks Friday at a symposium on studying and implementing the law.

Formulating and implementing the law is an important measure in the practice of the "one country, two systems," and a turning point for Hong Kong to turn crisis into opportunities and end chaos and restore order, Wang said.

Wang called on legal scholars and workers to play active roles in promoting the effective implementation of the law and resolutely safeguard national security as well as the lasting peace and stability in Hong Kong.

Noting that the law fully conforms to China's Constitution and the HKSAR Basic Law, Wang said it is a good law that will definitely bring good governance in Hong Kong.

It will act as a powerful deterrent against all sorts of anti-China elements in and outside Hong Kong and offer a strong institutional guarantee for safeguarding the long-term prosperity and stability in the region, he said.

The malicious attempts to obstruct the formulation and implementation of the law will never succeed, he added.
