Wang Chen, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), called for accelerating the legislation on anti-telecom and online fraud during an inspection of public security departments on June 1.

A team led by Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited a center of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau to survey anti-telecom and online fraud efforts. The team also reviewed procedures to cope with fraud cases at the bureau’s Chaoyang branch.

At a meeting organized by the Ministry of Public Security, Wang recognized the progress that has been made by public security organs in combating telecom and internet scams, including a declining number of new cases for 11 consecutive months and a rising detection rate compared with the previous year.

He said telecom and internet fraud remains a serious threat and some cases have become more sophisticated in terms of organization, technology usage and cross-border operations.

Wang called for a holistic approach, comprehensive measures, and international cooperation in the fight against telecom and online fraud.

He also suggested more targeted publicity activities to increase people’s awareness of such fraud in residential communities, villages, schools and businesses.

He added that it's necessary to speed up the formulation of the law on anti-telecom and online fraud, which is now under review, incorporate legislative suggestions from all sides, and stipulate the supervising responsibilities of finance, telecom and internet-related departments.
