Top legislator Li Zhanshu attended a symposium of deputies to the National People's Congress (NPC), who sat in on the 35th session of the 13th NPC Standing Committee, on June 22.
Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, urged the deputies to faithfully represent the interests and will of the people.
At the symposium, NPC deputies gave comments and suggestions on implementing the spirit of a central conference on work related to people's congresses and on fulfilling their obligations.
Li said lawmakers should serve as the bridge that links the Party and the country with the people and have a profound understanding of the goals and tasks set by the CPC Central Committee.
He also said deputies to the people's congresses at all levels should keep close ties with the people and put forward constructive and targeted motions and advice through legal procedures in order to address people’s concerns and safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.
Li called on lawmakers to take the lead in implementing the decisions of the CPC Central Committee, publicize and explain major policies as well as the Constitution and laws to the people, and fully mobilize all positive factors and curb negative ones by performing their duties.
Wang Chen, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over the symposium.
