A team led by Cai Dafeng, vice-chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, visited Central China's Hubei province on Sept 22, to survey the work related to the "double reduction" policy, which aims to ease the burden of excessive homework and off-campus tutoring of students in compulsory education.

The team of the NPC's Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee heard a report on the implementation of the policy and visited schools in the provincial capital of Wuhan to learn about efforts associated with curriculum design, after-school services, hobby groups and mental counseling.

Cai hailed Hubei's progress in carrying out the "double reduction" policy, stressing that the policy is an important and systematic undertaking that demands long-term and persistent commitment.

It's of great significance to promote the healthy and all-round development of students by improving teaching quality in schools and reducing dependence on after-school training centers, he said, adding that endeavors should also be made to provide a good environment for teachers' career development.

In advancing the education evaluation reform, efforts are also needed to improve vocational education and create a favorable atmosphere that inspires everyone to develop his or her own talent and realize his or her full potential, according to Cai.
