A symposium on the newly-revised law on protecting the rights and interests of women, which took effect on Jan 1, was held in Beijing on Jan 11.
At the symposium, Zhang Chunxian, vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), said that the revision of the law reflected China's national conditions, fundamentally bolstered the protection of women's legitimate rights and interests, and effectively responded to public concerns.
Zhang called for efforts to further study and implement the guiding principles of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), fully grasp the importance of the development of women's causes and the protection of their legitimate rights and interests, adhere to the development path for women with Chinese characteristics, fulfill due responsibilities, promote the implementation of relevant laws, and help every woman lead a fulfilling life.
Shen Yueyue, also vice-chairperson of the Standing Committee of the NPC, presided over the symposium. She stressed that the country must closely follow the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress, thoroughly implement the revised law on the protection of women's rights and interests, strengthen the building of supporting institutions, tackle pressing issues, act on the basic national policy on gender equality, and promote the all-round development of women.
