Senior legislator surveys social assistance legislation in Shandong

Wang Dongming, vice-chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee and chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, led a survey team to East China's Shandong province from May 17 to 19 to learn about the progress in social assistance legislation.

After attending a symposium with local officials in Jinan, capital city of Shandong, the survey team visited social assistance service centers at the village level and above in the city of Dezhou, a social welfare institution in Linyi county and a community governance service hub in Lixia district of Jinan.

They also talked with disadvantaged people and solicited public opinion on relevant legislation.

Wang spoke highly of the work done by Shandong on social assistance. He asked the province to further study and implement the major strategies and decisions set out at the 20th CPC National Congress on improving the social assistance system, acquire a thorough understanding of the significance of social assistance legislation, strengthen the research and deliberation of major legislative topics, accelerate high-quality social assistance legislation and advance related reforms.  

He also urged more efforts to respond to the pressing difficulties and problems of great concern to the people, to take into full account public opinion and national conditions in social assistance legislation, and to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of the people, and enhance their wellbeing.

Those in attendance of the survey included Yang Zhenwu, chairman of the NPC's Social Development Affairs Committee.
